After experiencing a taste of VFL football for Richmond before he was drafted, Kirby was a star of the VFL Magpies in 2017. The small forward led the club’s goal kicking tally with 43.17, and led all others league-wide until he was overtaken by Port Melbourne’s Jordan Lisle in the final game of the season.
Kirby would not have been concerned as Lisle kicked clear in the race for the Frosty Miller Medal. Instead, the Swan Hill product was preparing for his AFL debut at the MCG. After weeks of impressive form and a rapidly growing highlights reel, the people got what they wanted when Kirby was named in the forward pocket for a round 23 clash with Melbourne. His taste of senior action produced four disposals, five tackles and a reminder of the higher level of intensity produced at AFL level.
With unquestionable skill and desire to improve, Kirby looks set to once again win over the Magpie Army in 2017 and beyond.
